Setup: Cuisinart Slim Espresso Machine EM-160C Series Instruction Manual
Content
Overview
The Slim Espresso Machine EM-160C Series is a semi-automatic espresso maker for preparing single and double espresso, cold extraction drinks, steamed milk beverages, and hot water. Its compact design combines a 15-bar pump, bottomless portafilter, removable water reservoir, steam wand, adjustable drip tray, and programmable dose controls.
This machine is suited to home users who want more control over grind size, tamping, extraction volume, and milk texture than an automatic coffee maker provides. It can prepare café-style drinks such as cappuccinos, lattes, flat whites, Americanos, and iced espresso beverages.

Detailed Description
The EM-160C heats water and forces it through finely ground espresso under pressure. The bottomless portafilter attaches to the brew head and accepts either the single-shot or double-shot filter. Because the underside is open, the pour can be observed while adjusting the grind, coffee dose, and tamping pressure.
The removable water reservoir is positioned at the rear of the machine and must contain water and sit correctly in place before brewing. A cup-warming plate on top helps reduce temperature loss when cups are preheated before extraction.
The steam and hot water wand performs two functions. In steam mode, it introduces heat and air into cold milk to produce textured milk for cappuccinos and lattes. In hot water mode, it dispenses water for Americanos, tea, or other hot drinks.
The adjustable drip tray has an upper position for smaller cups. The drip tray plate and tray can be removed for emptying and cleaning. When using a travel mug for cold extraction, remove the drip tray to create additional clearance beneath the brew head.

Installing the Charcoal Water Filter
- Fully immerse the filter in cold tap water for 15 minutes.
- Remove the filter holder from the reservoir and open its filter compartment.
- Place the filter inside the holder and close it carefully to avoid damaging the filter material.
- Run cold tap water through the openings at the bottom of the compartment for 10 seconds.
- Let the filter drain completely, then slide the holder back into its channel and press it down to the bottom of the reservoir.
- Replace the filter every 60 days or after approximately 60 uses. More frequent replacement may be needed in areas with hard water.
Rinsing Before First Use
- Make sure the drip tray and plate are installed and the reservoir contains water.
- Fit either filter into the portafilter and secure the portafilter to the brew head.
- Place a large container beneath the portafilter.
- Press the Single Dose button and allow water to run through for approximately 20 to 25 seconds.
- If water does not emerge from the brew head, place the container beneath the steam wand. Turn the Steam/Hot Water knob ON for approximately 20 to 25 seconds, then return it to OFF.
Control Panel
- Power/Off button: turns the machine on or off and illuminates when active.
- Cold button: activates heatless cold extraction.
- Single Dose button: prepares a single espresso serving.
- Double Dose button: prepares a double espresso serving.

Making Espresso
- Preheat cups on the warming plate if desired, then remove them when ready to brew.
- Install the single-shot filter for one serving or the double-shot filter for two servings.
- Add finely ground espresso. The recommended amount is 7 to 9 grams for a single dose or 13 to 15 grams for a double dose.
- Use approximately two scoop measures for a single espresso or three for a double espresso.
- Level the grounds and apply moderate, even pressure with the tamper. Do not overfill the filter.
- Brush loose grounds from the filter rim.
- Lock the portafilter into the brew head.
- Place a cup beneath the portafilter and press Single Dose or Double Dose.
- The machine stops automatically at the programmed volume. Press the same dose button again to stop extraction early.
- Serve the espresso promptly, then remove the portafilter and discard the spent grounds.
A balanced pour is typically dark with caramel or reddish highlights. If water moves too slowly, the espresso may taste bitter and appear overextracted. If it moves too quickly, the drink may taste weak and have little crema. Adjust the grind and tamping pressure gradually rather than changing several variables at once.
Programming Dose Volumes
The factory dose volumes are approximately 1.0 ounce for a single espresso and 2.0 ounces for a double espresso. The programmable range is 1.0 to 2.7 ounces for a single dose and 1.7 to 4.0 ounces for a double dose.
- Prepare the appropriate filter with ground coffee, tamp it, and secure the portafilter.
- Place a cup beneath the portafilter.
- Press and hold Single Dose or Double Dose for approximately 3 seconds until that button begins breathing.
- Allow the espresso to flow until the desired amount is reached.
- Release the button. The selected button flashes five times and the machine beeps to confirm that the new volume has been stored.
Restoring Factory Settings
Press and hold the Power/Off and Cold buttons together for approximately 3 seconds, until one beep sounds and the control lights flash. The original dose settings will be restored.
Cold Extraction
The Cold function produces a heatless extraction using ambient-temperature water. It is suitable for iced espresso drinks and portable beverages.
- Prepare and tamp the coffee in the appropriate filter.
- Secure the portafilter and place a cup beneath the brew head.
- Press the Cold button. The Single Dose and Double Dose lights flash while the machine waits for the desired size.
- Press Single Dose for approximately 3.45 ounces or Double Dose for approximately 5 ounces.
- For a travel mug, remove the drip tray before placing the mug below the brew head.
Texturing Milk
- Pour cold milk into the frothing pitcher, filling it to approximately half full and never beyond the MAX mark.
- Press the Steam button and wait until its light becomes solid.
- Move the wand over the drip tray and turn the Steam/Hot Water knob ON briefly to purge water. Return the knob to OFF.
- Place the nozzle about half an inch below the milk surface and turn the knob ON.
- Angle the pitcher so the milk develops a whirlpool. Keep the nozzle just below the surface while the milk expands.
- Lower the pitcher gradually as the milk level rises. Avoid uneven spurting, which creates large bubbles.
- Move the nozzle toward the center when the desired foam has formed.
- Turn the knob OFF immediately. Do not boil the milk.
- Wipe the wand with a clean, damp cloth, then purge a small amount of steam to clear residual milk.
Hot Water
- Ensure the Steam button light is off so the machine does not enter steam mode.
- Place a cup or container beneath the wand.
- Turn the Steam/Hot Water knob ON.
- The hot water function stops automatically after one minute. Turn the knob OFF and move the wand over the drip tray to catch drips.
The machine automatically powers off after 30 minutes without use.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Switch off and unplug the machine before cleaning. Allow hot components to cool, and never immerse the appliance or its electrical parts in water. Do not place the machine’s parts or accessories in a dishwasher.

Descaling
Mineral deposits accumulate more quickly with hard water and frequent use. Run the two-stage cleaning cycle when the Clean/Descale indicator illuminates.
- Place two large containers, each approximately 1.5 liters, beneath the brew head and steam wand.
- Fill the reservoir with a solution of one-third white vinegar and two-thirds water, or use one descaling tablet mixed with water up to the MAX level.
- Press and hold Cold and Single together for approximately 3 seconds. The Clean/Descale indicator flashes.
- Turn the Steam/Hot Water knob ON. The indicator breathes as descaling begins.
- Allow hot water to flow from the wand until the indicator flashes, then turn the knob OFF.
- Water will flow from the brew head. When the reservoir is empty, the Steam light flashes and the Add Water indicator illuminates.
- Empty the containers and drip tray if necessary, then return them to position.
- Fill the reservoir with clean water to the MAX level.
- Press the Steam button to begin the rinsing stage. Water flows from the brew head.
- When the Clean/Descale indicator flashes, turn the Steam/Hot Water knob ON so water can flow from the wand.
- When the reservoir empties, the Clean/Descale indicator turns off and the flashing controls indicate that the cycle is complete.
