Setup: Emporia Vue Utility Connect User Manual
Content
Overview
The Vue Utility Connect is a plug-in energy monitor that reads usage data from a utility smart meter and sends it to the Emporia Energy app. It is designed for homes served by compatible AMI smart meters, making it a practical choice for homeowners who want whole-home energy monitoring without opening an electrical panel.
This model is a good fit for users who want a simple outlet-powered setup, wireless data access, and utility-based electricity tracking through the Emporia Energy platform. Vue Utility Connect is intended for select utility service areas and is built to work with supported Zigbee-enabled smart meters.

Detailed Description
The Vue Utility Connect receives energy data from a utility Advanced Metering Infrastructure smart meter and forwards that information to the Emporia Energy app over your home Wi-Fi network. Instead of using CT sensors inside a breaker panel, this system relies on the meter’s wireless broadcast and a nearby outlet connection.
The main hardware includes the energy monitor, a USB dongle connection, a front-panel power indicator, a Wi-Fi status light, a smart meter link light, and a reset opening on the front. Once installed, the unit continuously reports whole-home electricity usage, allowing you to view data from the app after setup is complete.
Safety
Use the device only as described in the installation guide. Do not open, disassemble, or try to repair any part of the system. If any component appears damaged, do not power it on or attempt to use it.
Setup and Operation
Start by locating your utility’s AMI smart meter, which is usually mounted outside near the circuit panel. The Vue Utility Connect must be plugged into a 120V AC outlet within range of that meter, and the guide notes a working distance of up to 100 feet.
Next, check the Wi-Fi signal near the chosen outlet. If the signal is weak, a Wi-Fi extender may be needed for reliable operation. Download the Emporia Energy app, create an account, and begin the setup flow before returning to the installation steps.
To power the unit, connect the USB dongle to the AC adapter and plug the adapter into the selected outlet. When power is active, the front power light turns green.
After that, use the app on a phone or tablet that is within 30 feet of the Vue Utility Connect. Tap the prompt indicating that the device is ready, then connect it to your Wi-Fi network using your network name and password. When the connection succeeds, the Wi-Fi light turns green.
Finally, complete the utility-meter pairing process by following the instructions for your location and electricity provider. After the smart meter link is established, the link light turns green.
LED indicators
- Power light green: the unit is receiving power.
- Wi-Fi light off: not connected to the router.
- Wi-Fi light solid green: connected to the router and Emporia.
- Wi-Fi light blinking once per second: establishing connection to Emporia.
- Wi-Fi light blinking every 2 seconds: router connection was lost.
- Smart meter link light off: not connected to the meter.
- Smart meter link light solid green: connected and receiving meter data.
- Smart meter link light blinking every 2 seconds: no meter data has been received for more than 1 minute.
Troubleshooting
If the Vue Utility Connect needs to be reset, use a paper clip in the hole on the right front of the unit. Holding the button for 5 seconds resets the smart meter link, and the link light blinks rapidly. After that, the device must be provisioned with the utility again to restore data.
Holding the button for 8 seconds resets the Wi-Fi connection, and the Wi-Fi light blinks rapidly. This requires setting up the device again in the Emporia app. If the button is held longer than 12 seconds, it has no effect.
If the Wi-Fi light stays off, the device has not connected to the router. If the smart meter link light is blinking every 2 seconds, the meter has not sent data for over a minute and the utility connection should be checked.
