Evenflo Secure Step Gate Before You Begin 

Decide where you want to install the gate and go through the following checklist: 
The opening must be between 29 and 42 inches (74 and 107 cm). Is the gate at the top or bottom of the stairs?

Use at the top or bottom of stairs ONLY if:
WARNING! DO NOT use on stairs if the gate is in a location over the open area above a step. The hardware on both sides of the gate must be mounted in solid wood, such as a door jamb, solid wood banister post, or wall stud behind drywall.
WARNING!: DO NOT use if one or both sides of the opening requires mounting in sheet rock, plaster, lath board, or any wall without solid stud support to screw into.

Are there baseboards? 
The gate wall brackets must be mounted to a flat surface. If your baseboard moldings have uneven surfaces where the wall brackets need to be mounted, you need to choose another location. Try moving the wall brackets to a different spot on the molding or above the baseboard molding. 
WARNING! DO NOT mount on uneven molding or woodwork trim. Hinge bar must be flat against wall. Bottom of hinge bar can be NO MORE than 1 inch (2.5 cm) from floor.

WARNING! The gate MUST be no more than  3 inches (7.62 cm) above the floor.

Install Hinge Bar/Gate Door Assembly

•  Place hinge bar A flat against the wall and no more than 1 inch (2.5 cm) above the floor. Note: The hinge bar MUST BE straight up and down (90º to the floor).
• With the hinge bar A properly positioned against the wall, drill two pilot holes (using the 9/64 inch drill bit [3.5 mm]) 2 inches (5 cm) deep through the hinge bar mounting holes B.
• Secure the hinge bar A to the wall with two of the provided screws C. Use ONLY a handheld Phillips screwdriver when installing screws.

TIP: After positioning the hinge bar,  press it against the wall to mark the  pilot hole locations.

Install Latch Bar of Evenflo Secure Step Gate

1. Place latch bar D flat against the wall directly across from hinge bar.
   IMPORTANT: The latch bar MUST be the same distance from the floor as the hinge bar. The latch bar MUST be straight up and down (90º to the floor).
2. With the latch bar D properly positioned against the wall, drill two pilot holes (using the 9/64 inch drill bit [3.5 mm]) 2 inches (5 cm) deep through the mounting holes E.
3. Secure the latch bar D to the wall with two of the provided screws C. Use ONLY a handheld Phillips screwdriver when installing screws.

Adjust Gate Width

• Loosen six adjustment screws, two in each clamp F, approximately two to three turns with the provided hex key and slide the gate G until the handle is 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from the latch, as shown. IMPORTANT: ONLY loosen the six adjustment screws. DO NOT completely remove.
• Ensuring both portions of the gate G are parallel to each other, tighten all six adjustment screws with the hex key until they are snug and the clamps are touching the metal frame, then tighten the screws one-and-a-half to two more turns.
• For the safety of children and pets, make sure the bottom of the gate G is NO MORE than 3 inches (7.62 cm) from the floor.

• Test to make sure the gate is secure by firmly shaking the gate assembly.

  

WARNING! The gate MUST be no more than  3 inches (7.62 cm) above the floor.

Install Swing Control Clip

IMPORTANT: You MUST use the swing control clip whenever this gate is used at the top of stairs. The swing control clip is optional for all other locations. To prevent the gate from swinging over the stairs, install the swing control clip H onto the gate door G and secure with the screw I provided , as shown. Use ONLY a handheld Phillips screwdriver when installing the screw.

Evenflo Secure Step Gate Care and Maintenance

• Wash gate with mild soap and warm water and dry thoroughly before using.
• Metal and plastic parts can be wiped clean with a soft damp cloth and dried with a soft cloth. DO NOT use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
• An occasional drop of vegetable oil may reduce wear and tear on moving parts.
