Napco GEM-RP8 Keypad User Manual
Content
Overview
The GEM-RP8 Keypad is a wall-mounted control and status interface for compatible NAPCO GEMINI security systems. It allows authorized users to arm and disarm the system, bypass selected zones, activate optional functions, respond to alarms, and review system trouble conditions.
The keypad is designed for homes and small premises using a connected security control panel, wired detection zones, and optional wireless devices. Its lights and built-in sounder provide visual and audible information about system readiness, alarms, delays, power, and faults.
Specifications
- Model: GEM-RP8
- Zone display capacity: 8 security zones
- User codes: Four-digit codes
- Emergency functions: Fire, auxiliary, and police emergency keys when enabled by the installer
- System connection: Operates as part of a compatible security control panel installation
- Power and communications: Supplied and supervised through the connected control panel
Detailed Description
The GEM-RP8 Keypad works with a security control panel that monitors detection devices distributed among numbered zones. A zone may represent a door, window, motion detector, smoke detector, or another protected area. When a zone is open while the system is disarmed, its numbered light illuminates. A zone light may flash when that zone is in alarm or has been activated during an alarm event.
The keypad uses dedicated lettered function keys and numerical keys. The numerical keys enter user codes and zone numbers. Key D completes standard arming and disarming commands after a valid user code has been entered. Key C clears incorrectly entered codes, resets selected alarm indications, and exits user-code programming.
Status information is shown through the green Status light, red Armed light, AC light, Trouble light, Fire Alarm light, zone indicators, and keypad sounder. The exact behavior of a zone depends on how the security professional configured that zone. For example, an entry door may have an entry delay, while a window may be programmed for immediate alarm response.
Safety
- Test the complete security system weekly, including the siren or bell, battery condition, protected zones, and central-station communication when the monitoring provider authorizes the test.
- If a fire alarm activates and there is evidence of fire, evacuate immediately and contact emergency services from outside the premises. Do not remain inside to operate the keypad.
- During an alarm indication, use caution before entering or investigating the premises. If necessary, leave and contact the appropriate authorities from a safe location.
- Replace wireless-device batteries only with the type specified for that device. Do not recharge, disassemble, or burn disposable batteries.
- A security system reduces risk but cannot guarantee prevention of burglary, fire, injury, or property loss. Maintain an escape plan and rehearse it with everyone who uses the building.
Controls and Indicators
- Status light: Illuminates when all zones are secure and the system is ready to arm.
- AC light: Shows that primary AC power is available.
- Trouble light H: Illuminates when the control panel detects a system problem; the sounder also pulses.
- Zone lights 1–8: Show open zones. A flashing zone generally identifies a zone involved in an alarm.
- Armed light: Illuminates when the system is armed and flashes during an alarm. It flashes rapidly when Instant Mode is active.
- Fire light I: Flashes during a fire alarm and remains illuminated until the fire condition has been reset.
- Key C: Clears a mistaken entry, resets selected indications, and exits programming.
- Key B: Bypasses a selected zone or, after arming, can bypass interior protection when permitted by the system configuration.
- Key E: Bypasses interior protective devices when used during the arming procedure and advances through additional trouble conditions.
- Key F: Removes entry delay after arming to activate Instant Mode.
- Key D: Completes a normal User Code arming or disarming command.
- Keys A and 0–9: Access special functions when pressed in sequence.
Setup and Operation
Check System Readiness
- Look at the green Status light before arming.
- If the Status light is off, inspect the illuminated zone numbers.
- Close the indicated doors, windows, or other protected areas when possible.
- If a zone cannot be secured, bypass it only when necessary and arrange for repair as soon as possible.
Arm the System When Leaving
- Confirm that the Status light is on, or identify and address any open zones.
- Enter the four-digit User Code.
- Press D.
- Confirm that the Status light goes out and the Armed light turns on.
- Leave through the programmed Exit/Entry door before the exit delay expires.
If the code is entered incorrectly, press C, enter the code again, and press D. A steady keypad tone during departure may indicate that the exit time has expired. Disarm and repeat the arming procedure before leaving.
Use Easy Arm
If the installer enabled Easy Arm, press D while the system is disarmed. This feature permits arming without entering a regular User Code and should be used only as intended by the system owner.
Bypass a Zone
- Press B, followed by the number of the zone that must be bypassed.
- Confirm that the selected zone light flashes slowly.
- Enter the User Code and press D.
- Leave through the Exit/Entry door.
A bypassed zone is not protected while bypassed. Bypassed zones are restored when the system is disarmed, so correct the underlying fault before the next arming cycle.
Protect the Premises While Staying Home
- Verify that the system is ready or secure any open zones.
- Enter the User Code and press D.
- Before the exit delay expires, press B followed by the number of each interior zone that should be bypassed.
- Remain inside while the exterior protection stays armed.
Some installations provide Automatic Interior Bypass. When enabled, the system may recognize that occupants have not left and automatically bypass interior zones such as motion detectors.
Activate Instant Mode
After the system is armed, press F to remove the entry delay from the Exit/Entry zone. The Armed light flashes rapidly in Instant Mode. Use this feature when occupants are inside and no delayed entry is required.
Use Easy Exit
If enabled by the installer, press A followed by 0 while the system is armed. The Exit/Entry zone becomes temporarily unprotected for three minutes, allowing an occupant to leave without fully disarming and rearming the system.
Disarm on Return
- Enter through the programmed Entry/Exit door.
- Listen for the steady entry-delay tone.
- Enter the User Code and press D before the delay ends.
- Confirm that the red Armed light goes out.
If the Armed light is flashing rapidly after return, an alarm occurred while the premises were unattended. Proceed cautiously and follow the applicable emergency procedure.
Silence a Burglary Alarm
- Enter the User Code and press D to silence the siren and keypad sounder.
- Observe the flashing zone light to identify the zone involved.
- Press C to clear the stored alarm indication after the situation is safe.
Respond to a Fire Alarm
- If there is an active fire, evacuate immediately and contact the fire department from outside.
- If there is no evidence of fire, enter the User Code and press D to silence the bell or siren.
- Identify the smoke or fire detector that activated.
- Press C to reset the fire zone after the cause has been addressed.
- Allow approximately 30 seconds for the Fire light to go out. If it remains lit, press C again after several minutes. Persistent indication requires service by a qualified security professional.
Emergency Functions
Emergency key combinations remain available whether the system is armed or disarmed when the installer has programmed them. Press the two keys in each combination at the same time.
- 7 + G: Fire emergency.
- 8 + G: Auxiliary emergency; the response depends on the installation.
- 9 + G: Police emergency.
Confirm which emergency functions are enabled before relying on them. Avoid testing emergency keys unless the monitoring provider and relevant emergency response arrangements have been notified.
Ambush Function
When enabled, the User 8 code can act as an Ambush Code. Entering it disarms the system while sending a silent ambush signal to the monitoring service. The keypad may appear to disarm normally, so use this function only when it has been specifically configured and explained by the security professional.
Function Menu
Special functions are selected by pressing A and then the assigned number in sequence.
- A + 0: Easy Arm when disarmed, or Easy Exit when armed if enabled.
- A + 1: Runs a two-second bell or siren test and initiates a battery test.
- A + 3: Activates the optional Access Output, which may operate a door strike, lighting, or another installer-configured device.
- A + 4: Displays current system trouble conditions when the Trouble light is on.
- A + 5: Turns the door chime feature on or off.
- A + 8: Enters User Program Mode after the User 1 code and D are entered.
- A + 9: Turns the local keypad sounder off or on.
The chime feature produces a keypad beep when a programmed door is opened while the system is disarmed. Turning off one keypad sounder does not silence other keypads connected to the system.
Weekly Testing
Bell and Battery Test
Press A followed by 1. The bell or siren should sound for approximately two seconds, and the control panel should test the backup battery.
Zone Test
- Walk through the protected premises.
- Open each protected door and window one at a time.
- Activate each motion detector as appropriate.
- Confirm that the corresponding zone number appears on the keypad.
Communication Test
- Notify the monitoring service before beginning.
- Secure all zones until the Status light indicates readiness.
- Enter the User Code and press D.
- Trigger an approved test zone.
- Confirm that the siren or bell sounds and that the alarm signal is transmitted.
- Enter the User Code and press D to silence the alarm.
- Confirm with the monitoring service that the signal was received.
System Troubles
The control panel continually checks power, communications, detection circuits, bells, wireless devices, and other critical services. When a fault is detected, the Trouble light illuminates and the keypad sounder pulses. Press A followed by 4 to display the trouble. If more than one condition is present, press E to move through the list and leave trouble-display mode.
- One beep, zone 1: AC power failure. Check that the system transformer is connected and that the circuit supplying it has not tripped.
- One beep, zone 2: Low backup battery. After a power failure, allow time for recharging. A continuing fault requires service.
- One beep, zone 3: Communication failure. A temporary communication interruption may clear after service is restored.
- One beep, zone 4: Telephone line failure. Temporary service interruption may clear automatically when restored.
- Two beeps, zone 1: Bell or siren fault.
- Two beeps, zone 2: Fire-circuit fault.
- Two beeps, zone 3: Wireless receiver fault.
- Two beeps, zone 4: Wireless receiver interference or jam condition.
- Three beeps, zones 1–8: Low battery in the wireless transmitter assigned to the illuminated zone.
- Four beeps, zones 1–8: Wireless transmitter supervisory failure.
- Five beeps, zones 1–4: Low battery in a wireless smoke detector.
- Six beeps, zones 1–4: Wireless smoke-detector supervisory failure.
- Seven beeps, zones 1–6: Zone trouble.
The system may still be armed while a trouble condition is present. Press A and 4 to review the fault, then enter the User Code and press D. Arrange qualified service promptly because a trouble condition may reduce protection.
User-Code Programming
User-code programming requires the User 1 code. Do not share user codes unnecessarily, and assign each regular user an individual code when the installation supports it.
Enter User Program Mode
- Press A followed by 8.
- Enter the User 1 code and press D.
- Wait for the Armed, Status, and Trouble lights to flash and the keypad to beep four times.
- Review the zone lights, which identify currently programmed user numbers.
Program or Change a User Code
- Press the user number to be programmed, such as 2 for User 2.
- Wait for two beeps and a flashing corresponding zone light.
- Enter the new four-digit code.
- Wait for four confirmation beeps.
- Repeat the process for other user numbers if required.
Erase a User Code
- Press the user number to be removed.
- Wait for the corresponding zone light to flash.
- Press F.
- Confirm that the zone light goes out.
Exit User Program Mode
Press C when code programming or deletion is complete.
Fire Escape Planning
- Draw a floor plan showing two possible exits from each room, including a door and a usable window when available.
- Check that windows open properly and identify escape ladders for elevated rooms when necessary.
- Choose an outdoor meeting location away from the building.
- Practice the escape plan with everyone in the premises.
- Keep bedroom doors closed while sleeping when practical.
- During a fire alarm, leave quickly without collecting belongings.
- Check a door before opening it. If it is hot, use the alternate route. If it is cool, open it carefully and be prepared to close it if heat or smoke enters.
- Stay low when moving through smoke and close doors behind you.
- Meet at the designated location and call the fire department from a safe telephone.
