Detailed Description
The power pack contains a sealed battery, charging circuitry, booster cables, a color-coded voltmeter, and a molded impact-resistant polyethylene case. Because the battery is sealed and maintenance-free, it can be transported or stored in different orientations without normal acid leakage.
A red rocker switch activates the battery meter for checking the charge level. The separate black rocker switch operates the built-in lamp. The main power switch controls power supplied to the two booster clamps; it does not control the 12V accessory socket or the lamp.
The unit includes a covered 12V DC receptacle for appliances designed to operate from a vehicle accessory socket. A covered charging receptacle accepts the supplied AC or DC charging equipment. A red LED illuminates while the system is charging.

Lead-acid battery precautions
- Lead-acid batteries release explosive hydrogen gas during normal operation, charging, and jump starting. Never smoke or use flames, matches, or cigarette lighters nearby.
- Only jump start or charge a battery in a well-ventilated area. Avoid vinyl clothing because static electricity can create sparks.
- Never work alone around a lead-acid battery. Keep soap and water nearby in case of contact with battery acid.
- If acid reaches the skin, clothing, face, or eyes, flush the affected area immediately with clean water and seek medical attention. Continue flushing the eyes and face until help arrives.
- Do not drop tools or other metal objects on or near the battery.
- Never jump start or charge a frozen battery.
- Follow the vehicle owner’s manual and the battery manufacturer’s safety instructions.
ATD-5922 connection warnings
- Use this system only with vehicles or boats that have 12-volt electrical systems. It is not a replacement for the vehicle’s battery.
- Keep the red and black clamps from touching each other or the same metal object.
- Connect the red positive clamp to the vehicle battery’s positive terminal.
- Connect the black negative clamp to a clean, non-moving metal part of the engine, away from the battery. Do not connect it directly to the negative battery terminal.
- Protect the power pack from direct sunlight, direct heat, and moisture to help prevent premature damage.
- California Proposition 65: The battery contains lead and other chemicals recognized by California as causing cancer, birth defects, or reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling.
Setup and Operation
Checking the battery level
- Press the red battery-test switch.
- Read the color-coded meter. The meter indicates the available charge and should show the full green range before jump starting.
Charging from 120V AC
- Locate the two receptacles on the right side of the power pack: one round receptacle and one rectangular charging receptacle.
- Remove the cover from the rectangular receptacle.
- Connect the supplied AC charging cord to the rectangular receptacle and then to a 120V AC wall outlet.
- Charge for at least four hours, or until the meter reaches the full green range when the test switch is pressed.
- Leave the unit charging until the meter indicates full capacity. Depending on the discharge level, a complete charge can require up to 72 hours.
The built-in charging circuit automatically changes to a float-charge mode to prevent overcharging. A temporary voltage drop after disconnecting the charger is normal. For best battery life, recharge the power pack after use and fully charge it at least every two to three months, even when it has not been used.
Charging from 12V DC
- Plug the supplied DC charging cord into the vehicle’s or boat’s 12V accessory socket.
- Connect the other end of the cord to the charging receptacle on the power pack.
- Charge for at least four hours, or until the meter shows full capacity in the green range.
The 12V DC charging method does not use the AC charger’s float-charge circuit. Use DC charging only when necessary because frequent use may shorten the system’s service life.
Jump starting a vehicle or boat
- Turn the vehicle or boat ignition and engine controls off.
- Connect the red positive clamp to the positive battery terminal.
- Connect the black negative clamp to a non-moving metal part of the engine, away from the battery.
- Turn the power pack switch on.
- Wait one or two minutes to allow the vehicle battery to receive an initial charge.
- Attempt to start the engine for no more than five to six seconds.
- If the engine does not start, wait at least three minutes before trying again.
- After the engine starts, turn the power pack off.
- Remove the black clamp first and return it to its storage position.
- Remove the red clamp and return it to its storage position.
- Recharge the power pack from a 120V AC source as soon as practical.
Using the 12V DC outlet
- Open the cover over the 12V DC receptacle.
- Plug the appliance’s 12V DC connector into the receptacle.
- Operate the appliance within its rated requirements. The power-pack switch may remain in either position for this function.
Approximate operating time from a full charge depends on the appliance load. Examples include about 30 hours for fluorescent lights or cell-phone use, 21 hours for radios or fans, 12 hours for camcorders or spotlights, 7 hours for electric tools or bilge pumps, 3 hours for electric coolers, and approximately 1.5 hours for an air compressor or car vacuum.
When a suitable power inverter is used, approximate runtimes include 1.5 hours for 100-watt devices, 1 hour for 150-watt devices, 45 minutes for 200-watt devices, and only a few minutes for 250-watt loads. Actual runtime varies with battery condition, appliance efficiency, and operating conditions.
Battery Replacement
- Remove the Phillips-head screws securing the rear cover.
- Lift away the cover to expose the battery compartment.
- Lift the battery out carefully.
- Disconnect the two 4-gauge jumper cables and the red and black charging wires from the battery terminals.
- Install the replacement battery in the same orientation as the original, with the positive terminal on the right and the negative terminal on the left.
- Connect the red jumper cable and red charging wire to the positive terminal. Connect the black jumper cable and charging wire to the negative terminal.
- Check that every connection is secure and tight, taking care not to damage the circuit board.
- Slide the replacement battery into position.
- Reinstall the battery-compartment cover and secure it with the Phillips-head screws.
Troubleshooting
- The engine does not start: Confirm that the power pack is fully charged, the ignition is off during connection, the red clamp is on the positive terminal, and the black clamp is attached to clean engine metal. Wait at least three minutes between starting attempts and limit each attempt to five or six seconds.
- The meter does not show full charge: Continue AC charging until the meter reaches the green full-capacity area. A severely discharged battery may require as long as 72 hours.
- The power pack loses capacity: Recharge it after use and at least every two to three months during storage. Repeatedly leaving the battery discharged can reduce battery life.
- The 12V appliance stops operating: Disconnect the appliance and check that its power demand is suitable for the protected 12V outlet. Recharge the power pack before continued use.
- The charger or cable is damaged: Stop using the unit and have the defective component replaced by qualified personnel.
