GETTING STARTED

  • Do not pressurize a partially assembled launcher.

BARREL BLOCKING DEVICE INSTALLATION

  1. Place the barrel blocking device onto the Barrel and position the cord under the Charging Handle as shown.
  2. Adjust the cord length retainer up to the back of the Charging Handle by pulling the cord through it until the retainer is snug against the back of the Charging Handle. Keeping the cord as tight as possible, leave just enough cord elasticity to remove the barrel blocking device for firing.
  3. After the cord length is properly adjusted, lock the cord length by tying a knot in the cord against the back of the retainer as shown.
  4. Before and after using the launcher, inspect the barrel blocking device. Replace the barrel blocking device if the device or cord is damaged, or if there is a loss of cord elasticity.
  5. Clean the barrel blocking device with plain, warm water and store it out of sunlight in a dry area when not in use.

INSTALLING CO2 CARTRIDGE & BUTTSTOCK

WARNING: CO2 CARTRIDGE SAFETY

  • When the CO2 pressure falls below a certain pressure, the Mission-4 will cease firing or may begin to sputter. If the Mission-4 is exposed to an increase in temperature, the pressure may increase enough for the Mission-4 to be able to regain the ability to fire.
  • Use only Byrna authorized 88g or 90g CO2 cartridges in this device.
  • Improper use, storage, or disposal of CO2 cartridges may result in property damage, serious personal injury, or death.
  • Do not expose pressurized CO2 cartridges to temperatures exceeding 120°F.
  • Keep all CO2 cartridges out of the reach of children.
  • Keep exposed skin away from escaping gas when installing or removing the CO2 cartridge, or if the launcher or CO2 cartridges are leaking. Compressed CO2 gas is very cold and can cause frostbite under certain conditions.
    1. Put the Safety Selector Switch in Safe mode (page 7) and install the barrel blocking device (page 8). Put the  CO2 ON-OFF valve in the OFF position by sliding it to the rear. The e magazine from the launcher and check to make sure no projectile is in the breach.
    2. Point the barrel in a safe direction. Cock the launcher by pulling the Charging Handle all the way back. Always keep the launcher in the cocked position when installing a CO2 cartridge and whenever the CO2 cartridge is attached to the launcher. This will help prevent an accidental discharge.
    3. Lubricate the CO2 cartridge valve O-Ring with Byrna Certified Launcher Oil.
    4. Insert the CO2 cartridge into the back end of the launcher.
    5. Twist the CO2 cartridge clockwise into the CO2 cartridge adapter until it stops and is pierced.
    6. Install the CO2 buttstock by sliding it over the rear of the CO2 cartridge and securely tighten the buttstock to the CO2 cartridge using the inincluded/8” hex key.  DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN

Use caution as the launcher is now capable of firing after you put the Safety Selector Switch in Fire mode and slide the CO2 ON-OFF valve forward to the ON position.

If you do not hear the full CO2  cartridge engage, the pin valve could be too short or the pin valve seal may be damaged.

Faqs

How do I safely assemble and gas up my byrna MISSION-4 Kit for the first time?

Begin by moving the safety selector to 'safe' and removing the magazine. Pull the charging handle to ensure the chamber is clear. Screw the CO2 adapter into the launcher, then attach the 88g CO2 cartridge until you hear a puff—this means it’s properly pierced. Always keep the CO2 on/off valve at 'off' during setup. Load your magazine, insert it, and you’re ready. For full details, refer to the official Byrna Mission 4 manual included with your kit[5].

What should I do if my byrna MISSION-4 Kit is leaking gas or not firing projectiles?

If you notice gas leaking or the launcher isn’t firing, first check that the CO2 cartridge is properly installed and the on/off valve is fully open. Ensure all O-rings are intact and lubricated; damaged O-rings can cause leaks. If issues persist after replacing O-rings and checking the magazine, contact Byrna customer support. Regularly check and maintain seals for optimal performance and safety, and always keep spare O-rings on hand as part of your kit maintenance routine[3].

Can I use other CO2 cartridge sizes with the byrna MISSION-4 Kit, or is the 88g CO2 mandatory?

The byrna MISSION-4 Kit is designed exclusively for 88g CO2 cartridges and will not function with any other size. Using incompatible cartridges can damage the launcher and void your warranty. The 88g CO2 provides up to 55 shots per cartridge, ensuring reliable performance for both training and self-defense scenarios. Always stock up on official 88g CO2 cartridges to keep your launcher ready for use[4].

What is the effective range and accuracy of the byrna MISSION-4 Kit for self-defense situations?

The byrna MISSION-4 Kit delivers projectiles at an average velocity of 325 FPS, with an effective range of up to 100 feet—the longest of any Byrna launcher. Accuracy is strong at 39 feet on a 6-inch target and 65 feet on an 18-inch target. The AR-15 style M-LOK shroud and adjustable flip-up sights enhance target acquisition, making it suitable for both home defense and outdoor training[1][6].

How do I switch between kinetic and pepper rounds with the byrna MISSION-4 Kit’s coupled magazines?

The kit includes two coupled 19-round magazines—one black (for kinetic rounds) and one orange (for pepper rounds). Simply insert the desired magazine into the launcher; the coupling system lets you quickly switch between projectile types without reloading. This feature is ideal for transitioning between training (kinetic) and self-defense (pepper) scenarios, maximizing your tactical flexibility during use[2].

What maintenance steps should I follow to keep my byrna MISSION-4 Kit in top condition?

Regularly inspect and clean the barrel, bolt, and magazine well. Lubricate O-rings and moving parts as recommended in the manual to prevent wear and ensure smooth operation. After each use, store the launcher with the CO2 valve off and magazine removed. Periodically check all screws and fittings for tightness. Keeping your byrna MISSION-4 Kit clean and well-maintained extends its lifespan and reliability[5].

Are there any legal restrictions or age requirements for purchasing and using the byrna MISSION-4 Kit?

The byrna MISSION-4 Kit is classified as a less-lethal weapon and is not a toy. It is only sold to individuals aged 18 and older. While it is legal in most U.S. states, local regulations may vary—always check your area’s laws before purchase or use. The launcher does not have an orange tip, as it is not a replica but a functional self-defense tool. Responsibility and compliance with local laws are essential[4].

What accessories are compatible with the byrna MISSION-4 Kit, and where can I find them?

The byrna MISSION-4 Kit features a quad picatinny rail system and M-LOK compatibility, allowing attachment of optics, lights, lasers, and foregrips. Official Byrna accessories—including additional magazines, projectiles, and carrying cases—are available through authorized dealers and the Byrna website. Always use accessories designed for the Mission 4 to ensure fit, function, and safety. Check the Byrna Mission 4 Rifle Accessories page for a full list of compatible gear[4].
