Detailed Description
The fresh-food compartment uses adjustable or fixed shelves, door bins, produce pans, and snack-storage areas to organize refrigerated items. Some versions include a QuickSpace shelf that folds or slides beneath itself, creating clearance for tall containers on the shelf below. Door bins may be adjustable, while certain models use fixed full-width gallon bins.
Climate Zone pans provide separate storage for produce. A floating snack pan may be repositioned, and some versions include a full-width lower drawer for larger items. Moisture that collects beneath drawers should be wiped dry.
The freezer design varies by model. Freezer-drawer versions generally use upper and lower full-width baskets, with an ice bucket on applicable models. Other versions use a fixed wire shelf and a sliding plastic basket. Do not load baskets above their rims because overfilling can interfere with drawer or basket movement.
LED lights illuminate the fresh-food compartment and freezer. Light locations vary, but fresh-food lighting may be positioned at the top center or near the climate pans, while freezer lighting is commonly located along the upper sides. LED assemblies require replacement by an authorized technician.
Safety
- Read all safety instructions before using the refrigerator.
- Keep gasoline and other flammable liquids or vapors away from the appliance.
- Never remove the grounding prong, use an adapter, or connect the refrigerator to an improperly grounded outlet.
- Plug the refrigerator into its own properly rated electrical outlet. Do not unplug it by pulling on the cord.
- Inspect the power cord and do not use it if it is cracked, frayed, or damaged.
- Keep fingers away from door gaps and other pinch points, especially when children are nearby.
- Do not allow children to climb on shelves, drawers, or door handles.
- Do not touch extremely cold freezer surfaces with wet or damp hands.
- Do not refreeze food that has completely thawed.
- Never place fingers or objects inside an ice-crusher opening or automatic ice-maker mechanism.
- Use a sturdy glass when dispensing ice because a thin glass may break.
- Allow cold glass shelves and covers to warm before washing them with warm water. Sudden temperature changes or impacts can break tempered glass.
- Repairs, electrical work, and LED replacement should be performed by a qualified service professional.
Electrical and disposal precautions
The refrigerator must remain upright and properly grounded. If an old refrigerator is discarded, remove its fresh-food and freezer doors and leave the shelves in place to reduce child-entrapment risks. Refrigerant must be handled according to applicable disposal requirements.
Setup and Operation
Initial installation
- Confirm that the installation location provides the clearances required by the exact model and allows the doors and freezer drawer to open fully.
- Place the refrigerator on a suitable floor and keep it upright during handling.
- Connect the appliance to an individual, grounded three-prong outlet.
- For models with an ice maker, keep the ice-maker power switch off before the water connection is completed.
- Open the household water shutoff valve after the water line is connected, then check for leaks.
- Move the refrigerator into its final position and level it using the front leveling legs.
- Allow the refrigerator up to 24 hours to stabilize at its selected temperature.
Temperature controls
Digital-control models use separate refrigerator and freezer temperature settings. The factory presets are 37°F for the fresh-food section and 0°F for the freezer. Some models use temperature knobs with Cold, Colder, and Coldest positions; the exact temperature varies by control position.
Do not block air outlets with food. Items placed directly against an outlet can cause uneven or unstable temperatures. Control-panel settings cannot remove electrical power from the refrigerator; unplug the appliance before cleaning, servicing, or replacing components.
TurboCool
TurboCool rapidly lowers the fresh-food compartment temperature after adding a large quantity of food, storing warm leftovers, or restoring operation after an extended power interruption. On applicable models, activate it by pressing and holding the designated TurboCool or Alarm control for three seconds until the display shows tc.
Fresh-food temperature adjustment is unavailable while TurboCool is active, while the freezer temperature is not affected. Fans may continue running when the refrigerator door is opened during the cycle.
Door alarm and control lock
The door alarm sounds when a refrigerator door remains open for more than two minutes. Closing the door stops the alert. Models with a Lock control can disable the dispenser and other controls when the Lock pad is held for three seconds; repeat the action to unlock them.
On applicable models, holding the refrigerator and freezer control areas together for three seconds places the refrigerator control in the off position. This does not disconnect the appliance from electrical power.
Water and ice dispenser
For an external dispenser, press a glass gently against the dispenser cradle. Keep the glass close to, but not touching, the opening. The spill shelf does not drain itself, so wipe it regularly to limit water spotting.
After initial installation, air may remain in the water line. Hold the water dispenser for at least five minutes to fill the system and purge trapped air, then discard the first six full glasses of water to flush installation impurities. Internal dispensers operate by holding a glass beneath the outlet and pressing the dispenser button; keep the glass in place for two or three seconds after releasing the button because water may continue to flow briefly.
Crushed ice may occasionally contain a few cubes, and a small amount of water or frost at the chute can be normal. If ice blocks the chute, remove the ice bucket and loosen the obstruction with a wooden utensil. Do not use fingers or add loose ice from trays or bags to a door-mounted ice bucket.
Water filter replacement
On applicable models, the MWF cartridge is installed in the back upper-right corner of the refrigerator compartment. Replace it when the filter indicator turns red, when water or ice production slows, or every six months on models without an indicator.
- Fill the replacement cartridge with tap water to improve initial dispenser flow.
- Turn the old cartridge slowly to the left and remove it. Be cautious because trapped air may cause a small release of water or push the cartridge outward.
- Align the arrow on the new cartridge with the holder.
- Insert the top of the cartridge into the holder without forcing it upward.
- Turn the cartridge slowly to the right until it stops. Do not overtighten.
- Dispense about 1.5 gallons of water, or approximately three minutes, to clear air and prevent sputtering.
- Hold the Reset Water Filter control for three seconds when the model provides that function.
If a replacement filter is unavailable, install the approved filter-bypass plug. The dispenser and ice maker will not operate without either a filter cartridge or the bypass plug.
Shelves, pans, and bins
To remove an adjustable refrigerator shelf, empty it, raise the front, lift the rear from its track, and bring it out. To reinstall it, insert the rear hooks into the desired track openings and lower the front until it locks.
Remove adjustable or fixed door bins by lifting them straight up and pulling them outward. Engage the bin with the molded door supports and press down to reinstall it.
To remove a climate pan or snack pan, slide it forward to its stop, lift it beyond the stop, and pull it out. For a full-width drawer, pull it to the stop, raise the front, and lift it out. Reinstall the drawer by placing its rear section on the slides first, lowering the front, and pushing it closed.
Freezer baskets and shelves
For a top freezer basket, pull it forward to the stop and lift it from the slides. Remove the bottom basket only after removing the top basket. Raise the front of the lower basket, pull it forward, and release its pin from the slot. When reinstalling it, place the pin back into the slot and ensure the basket rests on the support tabs before closing the drawer.
On models with a fixed wire shelf and sliding plastic basket, pull the basket fully forward, raise its front, and pull it straight out. Reinstall it in the lower liner rails. The wire shelf is not designed to slide; for cleaning, push it toward one side, lift the opposite side, and remove it from the supports.
Automatic ice maker
After the refrigerator is connected to water and reaches operating temperature, set the ice-maker switch to on. Ice production may take 12–24 hours to begin. The ice maker fills when the freezer reaches approximately 15°F (-10°C), and production varies with freezer temperature, room temperature, door openings, and water pressure.
Discard the first several batches of ice to clear the water line. Keep the feeler arm or other sensing mechanism unobstructed. Production stops when the ice reaches the sensing level. Cloudy, stale, or shrunken cubes can result when ice remains unused for a long period.
For a door-mounted ice bucket, open the ice-box door, lift the bucket by its handhold, and remove it from the guide brackets. Reinstall it on the brackets and push it into place. If it does not seat correctly, rotate the ice-bucket fork one-quarter turn clockwise.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Interior cleaning
Unplug the refrigerator before cleaning. Use a solution of approximately one tablespoon of baking soda in one quart of water to clean and deodorize interior surfaces. Rinse surfaces and dry them thoroughly. Wring excess moisture from the cloth when cleaning near lights, switches, or controls.
Do not wash cold glass shelves or covers with warm water. Handle them carefully because impact can cause tempered glass to shatter into small pieces.
Exterior cleaning
Clean stainless-steel panels, handles, and trim with a suitable stainless-steel cleaner. Do not use bleach, chlorine-containing products, appliance wax, or abrasive cleaners on stainless steel. Clean silver-accented plastic components with mild detergent and a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid scouring pads and powdered cleaners.
Clean the dispenser spill tray regularly. A lime-removal product may be used when mineral deposits build up.
Moving and vacation storage
Before moving the refrigerator, secure loose shelves and drawers. Raise the leveling legs, pull the appliance straight out, and avoid moving it sideways across the floor. Do not rest the front or rear of the refrigerator on a hand truck; handle it from the sides and keep it upright.
For a long absence, remove the food, turn the refrigerator off or unplug it, empty the ice bucket, and shut off the water supply. Clean the interior with the baking-soda solution and leave the doors open. If freezing temperatures are possible, have the water system drained by a qualified service professional.
After returning, install a fresh water filter when applicable and dispense approximately two gallons of water over about five minutes to flush the system.
Troubleshooting
- The refrigerator is not cooling: Confirm that it is connected to power, that controls are not set to the off position, and that doors close completely. Allow up to 24 hours for a temperature change to stabilize.
- Temperatures fluctuate: Keep food away from air outlets, avoid blocking internal airflow, and limit extended door openings.
- The dispenser produces no water: Check that the household water supply is open, the filter or bypass plug is installed correctly, and air has been purged from the line.
- Water flow is slow: Replace the filter if its indicator is red, if it is older than six months on models without an indicator, or if flow has noticeably decreased.
- The ice maker does not make ice: Verify that the water supply is connected, the ice-maker switch is on, the feeler arm is unobstructed, and the freezer has had sufficient time to cool.
- The ice bucket will not seat: Confirm that it is aligned with the guide brackets. If necessary, rotate the ice-bucket fork one-quarter turn clockwise.
- The ice chute is blocked: Remove the ice bucket and loosen the blockage with a wooden utensil. Never place fingers in the chute.
- A door alarm sounds: Check that both doors and the freezer drawer are fully closed and that no bin, shelf, or package is preventing closure.
- A basket sticks: Reduce the load below the basket rim and verify that the basket is seated on its slides or support tabs.
- The refrigerator makes unusual sounds: Humming, buzzing during water filling, fan operation, and occasional clicking can occur during normal cooling and ice-making cycles.
