Setup and Operation
Check door handing
Verify the handing before installing the PM Series Escutcheon and Sectional Lock. If the handing is incorrect, pull the latch outward and rotate it 180 degrees. The handing screw must be positioned on the interior side of the chassis; move it to the opposite side if necessary.
Escutcheon installation
- Install the mortise chassis in the prepared door, leaving its mounting screws slightly loose.
- Fit the spindle and spring into the chassis.
- Prepare the exterior spring cage. Insert the mounting ferrules into the spring cage marked “Outside,” using the 45-degree or 135-degree diagonal holes according to the door handing.
- Check that the word “Latch” on the spring cage is closest to the door edge.
- Select the required exterior trim configuration, such as cylinder, blank, coin turn, or emergency turn.
- Install the exterior spring cage assembly into the exterior escutcheon.
- Snap the exterior trim spacer into position.
- Slide the exterior lever onto the spring cage. Keep the lever supported because it is not retained until the exterior trim assembly is installed.
- Install the complete exterior trim assembly.
- Install the exterior cylinder when the selected lock function requires one.
- Install the interior spring cage spacer with its tab facing downward.
- Install the interior spring cage. Center the exterior escutcheon opening around the lever and keep the escutcheon parallel with the door edge while tightening.
- Fit the interior backplate at an angle so it snaps into the interior spring cage assembly.
- Select and install the interior trim: thumbturn, cylinder, or blank, as applicable.
- Install the interior escutcheon lever.
- Tighten the interior and exterior lever set screws.
- Install the interior cylinder when applicable.
- Tighten the chassis mounting screws and the cylinder retaining screw if required.
- Install the armor front.
Sectional installation
- Install the mortise chassis in the prepared door without fully tightening its mounting screws.
- Install the spindle and spring.
- Assemble the exterior spring cage and trim.
- Insert the ferrules into the spring cage marked “Outside,” selecting the 45-degree or 135-degree diagonal holes according to the door handing.
- Confirm that “Latch” is closest to the door edge.
- Press the exterior rose onto the spring cage by hand. Keep its staking features horizontal, and position the notch toward the door hinge and away from the latch.
- Install the exterior lever on the exterior spring cage assembly.
- Install the exterior trim subassembly.
- Install the interior spring cage.
- Press the interior rose into place by hand, with its notch toward the door hinge and away from the latch.
- Install the interior trim.
- Make sure the chassis is locked before installing the interior thumbturn.
- Install the interior and exterior cylinders when required by the lock function.
- Install the interior lever.
- Tighten both lever set screws.
- Tighten the chassis mounting screws and the cylinder retaining screw if required.
- Install the armor front.
Final operation check
Operate both levers several times before closing the door. Confirm that the latch retracts smoothly, the trim remains parallel to the door edge, the lever set screws are secure, and any cylinder or thumbturn operates as intended.
Troubleshooting
Escutcheon gap is not centered around the lever
Cause: The exterior trim was not centered while the interior spring cage screws were tightened.
Solution: Remove the affected trim and restart at the interior spring cage installation step. Center the opening evenly around the lever and keep the escutcheon parallel with the door edge before tightening.
Lock operation is reversed
Symptom: The exterior lever provides immediate egress while the interior lever performs the locking and unlocking function in the opposite manner from what is expected.
Cause: The handing screw is installed on the wrong side of the mortise chassis.
Solution: Inspect the chassis and move the handing screw to the interior side. If needed, remove and rotate the latch 180 degrees before reinstalling the screw.
Pros & Cons
- Pros: Supports multiple trim configurations, including cylinders, blanks, thumbturns, and emergency turns.
- Pros: Provides separate installation instructions for escutcheon and sectional trim styles.
- Pros: Includes clear handing, alignment, and troubleshooting guidance.
- Cons: Installation requires careful manual alignment before final tightening.
- Cons: Incorrect handing can reverse the expected lock and egress functions.
