Detailed Description
The Essential Security Camera (3rd Gen) uses a wide-angle lens to monitor a broad area while reducing blind spots. The HD versions provide 1080p-class video, while the 2K versions capture more detailed footage for identifying activity at greater distances.
On the front of the camera, the main components are the camera lens, status LED, ambient light sensor, microphone, speaker, and spotlight. The underside contains the USB-C charging port, pairing button, and wall-mount connection. Component placement can vary slightly between the standard and XL camera bodies.
The integrated spotlight activates when configured in the Arlo Secure App or when motion-related spotlight settings call for additional illumination. It can also be switched on or off manually during a live stream. With the spotlight enabled, the camera can produce colour footage in low-light or nighttime conditions.
The built-in siren can be triggered remotely or configured to activate automatically. Two-way audio allows a person viewing the live stream to listen through the camera and speak through its speaker.
Motion detection works best when people or objects move across the camera’s field of view rather than directly toward or away from the lens. Activity and privacy zones can be configured in the app when supported by the selected Arlo Secure service.
Safety
- Use the supplied USB-C charging cable indoors only.
- Do not expose the charging cable or an open charging port to rain, moisture, or water.
- Close the USB-C port cover completely after charging before using the camera outdoors.
- Install the camera securely and confirm that the mount is locked before leaving it unattended.
- Keep the camera and wireless transmitter at least 20 cm from your body and nearby people during normal operation.
- Do not attempt to remove or replace the integrated battery.
- Avoid mounting the camera where thick walls, concrete, brick, metal, mirrors, or large quantities of water obstruct the path to the router.
- Do not point the camera directly at windows, mirrors, or other reflective surfaces where sunlight or glare can reduce image quality.
Setup and Operation
Install the Arlo Secure App
Install the latest version of the Arlo Secure App from your phone or tablet’s app store, then create or sign in to an Arlo account. The app guides the Wi-Fi setup and mounting process.
To add the camera manually, open the app, select Devices, tap the plus icon, choose Cameras, select Essential Series, choose Battery Cameras, and then select Security Camera (3rd Gen).
Prepare the Camera for Pairing
- Confirm that the camera has a pairing button on top. This identifies it as the applicable third-generation battery camera design.
- Open your phone’s settings and allow the Arlo Secure App to use Bluetooth.
- Keep Bluetooth enabled throughout setup.
- Press and hold the pairing button for up to three seconds.
- Release the button when the LED flashes blue, then follow the instructions in the app.
If the camera is shut down, holding the pairing button for three seconds wakes it and starts a two-minute discovery period. A quick press while the camera is shut down does not change its state. If the LED does not flash after pressing the button, charge the camera for about 30 minutes and try again.
Connect to Wi-Fi
The app guides the camera through connection to your home Wi-Fi network. The camera supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, and compatible routers may automatically select the most suitable band.
- During setup, place the camera approximately 3 to 4.5 metres (10 to 15 feet) from the router.
- For normal operation, keep the camera within approximately 90 metres (300 feet) of the router in a clear line of sight.
- Walls, ceilings, brick, concrete, stone, ceramic, glass, mirrors, metal, and water can reduce signal strength.
- Keep separate Arlo cameras at least 2 metres (6.5 feet) apart to reduce wireless interference.
Choose and Test a Location
Select a position with a clear view of the area to be monitored and enough light for reliable motion detection. A corner location can increase coverage, while a shelf, table, wall, or ceiling can be suitable indoors.
For outdoor installation, choose an unobstructed position with as few blind spots as possible. Avoid direct views through windows or toward reflective surfaces. Before drilling, hold the camera at the intended location and check both the camera view and the Wi-Fi signal strength shown in the Arlo Secure App.
Mount the Camera
- Hold the mounting bracket against the wall and mark the pilot-hole positions.
- Drill the pilot holes. When using wall anchors, use a 15/64-inch, size B, or 6 mm drill bit.
- Insert the wall anchors if required.
- Align the bracket with its arrow pointing upward.
- Secure the bracket with the supplied screws.
- Align the arrow on the camera mount with the arrow on the bracket.
- Slide the camera onto the bracket until it locks into place.
- Check that the camera is secure, then rotate it to set the viewing angle.
Charge the Battery
The camera is shipped partially charged. Because the battery is integrated, charging is performed through the USB-C port rather than by removing a battery pack.
- Open the cover over the USB-C charging port.
- Connect the supplied USB-C cable to the camera.
- Connect the other end to a USB charging port or compatible AC power adapter.
- Continue charging until the front status LED is solid blue.
- Disconnect the cable and close the port cover before using the camera.
Use Spotlight and Smart Features
Open the camera settings in the Arlo Secure App to adjust spotlight brightness and choose when the spotlight activates. During live streaming, the spotlight can be turned on or off manually.
Arlo Secure may provide enhanced notifications, event video history, AI recognition for people, vehicles, and deliveries, and configurable activity or privacy zones. Availability can depend on the selected service and region.
Understand LED Indicators
- Slow blue flashing: The camera is pairing with a Wi-Fi network.
- Fast blue flashing: The camera has paired with Wi-Fi and connected.
- Amber flashing: The camera may be out of range, may have encountered a pairing error, or may have a battery level of 15 percent or less.
- Alternating blue and amber: A firmware update is in progress.
- Solid red: The camera is paired with Apple HomeKit and is streaming.
- Solid blue during charging: The battery has reached the charging state indicated for completing the indoor charging process.
Troubleshooting
The App Cannot Find the Camera
- Confirm that Bluetooth is enabled and that the Arlo Secure App has Bluetooth permission.
- Check that the correct camera model was selected in the app.
- Verify the Wi-Fi network name and password, including capitalization.
- Place the camera and phone close to the router during setup.
- Confirm that the camera has enough battery charge. If there is no blue LED response, charge it for about 30 minutes and retry.
The Camera Disconnects During Setup
Keep the phone and camera near each other while setup is running. Move the camera closer to the router if the signal is weak, and remove obstacles such as thick walls or large metal objects from the path between the devices.
The Device Is Already Claimed
If the app reports that the camera is already associated with an account, continue through the available mounting guidance or reset the camera before starting setup again. A factory reset removes the camera from its current account and returns it to its default state.
- Press and hold the pairing button for approximately 15 seconds.
- Release the button when the LED begins flashing amber.
- Confirm that the LED flashes amber three times after release.
- Run the camera setup process again in the Arlo Secure App.
If the button is held too long and the required amber sequence does not occur, repeat the reset procedure.
Live Streaming Is Unstable
- Move the camera closer to the router if the signal is weak.
- Check the Wi-Fi signal indicator in the app; one or two bars may work intermittently, while three or four bars are preferable.
- Reduce nearby Wi-Fi interference by limiting unnecessary networks, devices, or competing frequencies.
- Recharge the camera when its battery level reaches two bars in the Devices screen.
- When using several 2K streams, allow an average bandwidth of at least 2 Mbps per camera.
Push Notifications Are Missing
- Sign in to the Arlo Secure App. Logging out prevents normal push-alert registration.
- Disable Do Not Disturb mode if it is blocking alerts.
- Check the phone’s notification permissions and SMS settings.
- Confirm that the phone number used for verification is current.
- Check the email spam folder and adjust filtering if Arlo messages are being diverted there.
Too Many Alerts Are Arriving
Use activity and privacy zones in the camera settings to limit monitoring to the areas that matter. For a temporary pause, use the notification-mute control available from the phone’s incoming-alert interface.
