Detailed description
The McKinley EB30 Powered Bookshelf Speakers use one powered main speaker and one passive companion speaker. The active speaker houses the amplifier, power input, source connections, control knob, LED indicator, IR sensor, and speaker wire output. The passive speaker connects to the active unit through speaker wire.
Each speaker includes a tweeter and woofer for a two-way sound layout. The system is designed for direct connection to audio sources through RCA, Bluetooth, or Aux, and the remote gives quick access to power, volume, bass, treble, mute, track control, source switching, and EQ reset.
In regular use, the speaker system can remember the last Bluetooth device it paired with, which makes reconnecting faster after the first setup.
Safety
- Place the active speaker on the right and the passive speaker on the left during setup.
- Keep the speaker wire connections matched correctly so positive connects to positive and negative connects to negative.
- Use the included speaker wire only for shorter distances; if the speakers must be spaced farther apart, use suitable 22-gauge speaker wire.
- When placing the speakers on a shelf or in a cabinet, position the front edge of the cabinet as close to the front of the speakers as possible for better sound.
- Use a turntable preamp when required, since a turntable connected without one may play at very low volume.
- Do not pair the unit with another source if Bluetooth range or interference causes unstable playback; obstacles can reduce wireless distance.
Setup and operation
What is included
- McKinley EB30 Powered Bookshelf Speakers
- Remote control
- 8 ft. speaker wire
- Power cord
- 4 ft. RCA to Aux cable
First-time setup
Set the active speaker on the right and the passive speaker on the left. Connect the speaker wire between the spring clips on both speakers, making sure each wire goes to the matching color terminal. After that, plug the power cord into the active speaker and connect it to a standard outlet.
If the speakers are going on a shelf or inside a cabinet, keep their front edges as close to the shelf edge as possible. If the speakers need to sit farther than 8 feet apart, use a longer 22-gauge speaker wire.
Power and source selection
Press the control knob on the active speaker to turn the system on. Hold the control knob to turn it off. Press the control knob again to cycle through inputs. The LED shows the selected source color: blue for Bluetooth, green for RCA, and yellow for Aux.
The remote can also power the unit on and off and switch sources.
Bluetooth pairing
Select the Bluetooth input until the blue LED appears, then pair your device to “Electrohome EB30.” Once connected, the speaker will try to reconnect to the last paired device automatically when it is back in range or when Bluetooth is re-enabled.
If pairing fails, hold the pair button for about 3 seconds or use the Bluetooth pairing reset button on the back of the unit. Bluetooth range is listed as up to 33 feet in clear line of sight, although walls and other obstacles can shorten that distance.
RCA input
Connect an RCA cable from your source device to the active speaker, then select the RCA input. This input is useful for turntables, computers, smartphones, and similar devices. When using a turntable, make sure a phono preamp is available.
Volume should be adjusted on both the EB30 and the source device for the best balance.
Aux input
Connect a 3.5 mm AUX cable from your source device to the active speaker, then switch to the Aux input. The included RCA to Aux cable can also be used for compatible setups.
Remote control functions
- Power on/off
- Volume up/down
- Bass up/down
- Treble up/down
- Mute
- Play/pause with a tap
- Bluetooth reset with a hold
- Previous/next track
- Source selection
- EQ reset
EQ adjustment and LED behavior
The bass and treble controls can each be adjusted from -5 to +5. When bass or treble is set to the center position, the status light flashes the active input color. If either control reaches the minimum or maximum setting, the LED flashes red twice.
The LED also uses color to show standby and source status. Blue indicates Bluetooth pairing or connection, green indicates RCA, and yellow indicates Aux. A solid red light indicates standby.
Break-in period
The speakers benefit from 10 to 12 hours of playback at moderate volume. This helps the rubber surround loosen naturally so the driver can move more freely and reproduce sound more smoothly.
Cleaning and maintenance
Clean the cabinets with a dry, lint-free microfiber cloth. Avoid using wet cloths or harsh cleaners so the finish and internal components stay protected.
Troubleshooting
- If there is no power, make sure the LED brightness is not turned off and check that the power adapter is fully inserted.
- If there is no audio, confirm that volume on both the EB30 and the source device is above zero, then verify the correct input is selected.
- If the passive speaker is silent, check that the speaker wire is firmly connected to the binding posts on both speakers.
- If the sound is too quiet, flatten the EQ on the source device or app and disable volume normalization. A turntable may also need a preamp.
- If the sound is poor, confirm the wire polarity matches on both speakers, test another source, and try different RCA or Aux cables.
- If bass is excessive, move the speakers farther from the wall; if bass is weak, move them closer.
- If a turntable setup sounds weak or noisy, check that the ground cable is connected properly and that the preamp is enabled or installed.
