Detailed Description
The transformer cabinet houses the electrical conversion equipment and provides labeled primary and secondary connection areas. The line connections receive the incoming supply, while the load connections provide the transformed output to downstream equipment. Depending on the configuration, the cabinet may include primary and secondary circuit breakers for controlled energization and load protection.
A dual-voltage secondary may include a neutral terminal commonly identified as X0. This terminal is used for secondary connections only. It must not be used as a primary-side neutral connection.
The cart grounding lug provides a dedicated point for bonding the cabinet to the facility or system grounding arrangement. The enclosure access panels and dead front are safety barriers and must remain installed whenever the transformer is energized.
Safety
Hazardous electrical energy may be present inside the cabinet when it is energized. Only qualified personnel familiar with electrical codes and transformer work should install, inspect, service, or maintain this equipment.
- Disconnect every input power source before opening the cabinet or touching internal parts.
- Use an approved lockout/tagout procedure and verify that the equipment is de-energized before work begins.
- Never operate the transformer with access panels, removable doors, or the dead front removed.
- Place the cart on level, hard ground to reduce the risk of tipping.
- Maintain at least 36 inches of working clearance in front of the panel and access areas.
- Install the transformer where it is protected from physical damage and where ventilation is adequate.
- Keep the equipment away from explosive or corrosive gases and vapors.
- Ground the cabinet in accordance with the National Electrical Code and applicable local requirements.
- Never supply a transformer with a neutral conductor on the primary side.
- For reverse-feed or step-up use, confirm that no neutral conductor is connected to the transformer input. The bonding jumper between X0 and the grounding conductor must also be removed for that application by qualified personnel.
Setup and Operation
Before Installation
Inspect the cabinet immediately after delivery for shipping damage. Also inspect it again after handling and before wiring. Compare the nameplate information with the job requirements, including the available line voltage and the required load voltage. Do not install a cabinet that does not match the application.
Ensure the installation area is level, firm, ventilated, and free from conditions that could expose the transformer to impact, corrosive vapors, explosive gases, or excessive moisture.
Installation Procedure
- Position the cart on level, hard ground with the required access clearance.
- Confirm that the nameplate line and load ratings match the intended application.
- Disconnect the primary supply using an approved lockout/tagout procedure.
- Ground the cabinet through the grounding lug between the cart wheels in accordance with applicable electrical codes.
- Select cables with insulation rated for at least 90°C and size them according to the National Electrical Code and local requirements.
- Connect line and load conductors only to the appropriately labeled Cam Lock or multiconductor connection points.
- Inspect every termination for correct placement, secure hardware, and the required torque.
- Maintain at least 1 inch of clearance between the enclosure and energized components after cables and connectors are installed, unless an approved insulating method provides equivalent protection.
- Replace all access panels and removable doors before energizing the transformer.
- If moisture may have entered during transport or storage, dry the unit completely before applying power.
- Restore the primary supply after the installation has been checked.
- Turn on the transformer primary breaker and, where fitted, the secondary breaker.
- After the transformer is energized correctly, close only the breakers needed to supply the connected load.
Outdoor Installation
Outdoor installations require a location, cable system, mounting arrangement, and hardware that meet applicable codes. Use watertight fittings at all electrical connections to limit water entry and protect the wiring system.
Connection Torque
Use the bolts recommended for the wiring lugs. Where practical, use two wrenches when tightening or loosening bolted connections so the terminal and internal parts are not damaged.
- 2S350 lugs: 375 inch-pounds
- 2S600 lugs: 500 inch-pounds
- 1/4-inch SAE Grade 5 screw or bolt: 8 foot-pounds
- 5/16-inch SAE Grade 5 screw or bolt: 17 foot-pounds
- 3/8-inch SAE Grade 5 screw or bolt: 30 foot-pounds
- 7/16-inch SAE Grade 5 screw or bolt: 50 foot-pounds
- 1/2-inch SAE Grade 5 screw or bolt: 75 foot-pounds
Maintenance
Only qualified personnel should maintain the Dolly Cart Transformer. Disconnect all power sources, apply lockout/tagout, and test to confirm that the cabinet is safe before opening it or working on internal components.
Enclosure Inspection
Visually examine the enclosure for dents, cracks, corrosion, loose hardware, damaged finishes, or other conditions that could affect protection or safe operation.
Badges and Labels
- Verify that all required safety and identification badges are present.
- Keep badges clean and readable.
- Replace badges that are coming loose or losing adhesion.
Doors, Latches, and Hinges
- Check that door latches and cams rotate freely.
- Confirm that a latched door closes firmly enough for the gasket to form a proper seal.
- Make sure door hinges move freely without binding.
- Check that hinge fasteners remain tight.
Circuit Breakers
Follow the circuit-breaker manufacturer's instructions for inspection, servicing, testing, and maintenance of breaker components. Do not perform breaker work while the transformer is energized.
Troubleshooting
The Transformer Does Not Energize
- Verify that the primary supply is available and that the required breaker is in the correct position.
- Check the nameplate against the available line voltage and intended load voltage.
- Inspect labeled line and load connections for incorrect placement or loose terminations.
- Confirm that all required access covers are installed and that no protective device has opened.
A Breaker Trips
- Remove the load from service only under an approved electrical safety procedure.
- Have qualified personnel check for incorrect voltage, overloaded circuits, loose connections, or downstream faults.
- Use the circuit-breaker manufacturer's service instructions for breaker-specific diagnosis.
Moisture Is Suspected
Do not energize the transformer if it may have been exposed to moisture during transport or storage. Have qualified personnel dry and inspect the equipment before restoring power.
A Door Does Not Seal
Check the latch, cams, hinges, gasket, and mounting hardware. Do not operate the transformer if a door cannot close securely or the gasket cannot provide an effective seal.
