What You Should Know Before Getting Started
This startup guide will help you install your SURFboard® SBG6580 Wireless Cable Modem Gateway and set up a secure wireless network connection. There are three SBG6580 Connection Video Tutorials available if you need additional help setting up your gateway. IMPORTANT" You must have a live broadband cable connection installed before starting your gateway installation. If you do not, please contact a service provider for assistance. When contacting your service provider, you may be asked for the Model name (SBG6580), HFC MAC ID, and Serial number (S/N) located on the gateway label on the bottom of your SBG6580 (see page 4).
Motorola Modem Gateway SBG6580 Specifications
The SBG6580 SURF board features DOCSIS 3.0 technology, which supports download speeds of up to 343 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 131 Mbps. It has built-in dual-band wireless-N technology, which provides000 fast and reliable wireless connectivity for multiple devices. The device also has four Gigabit Ethernet ports for wired connections. Its dimensions are 9.1 x 5.9 x 2.2 inches, making it a compact and space-saving solution.
Install the Gateway
Note: You may need additional items that are not included with your SBG6580 (coaxial cable or RF splitter) to complete your gateway installation.
- Connect the coaxial cable from the cable wall outlet or RF splitter (optional) to the Cable connector on the rear of the SBG6580. Use your hand to tighten each connector to avoid damaging them.
- Connect the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on your computer and to an available Ethernet port on the rear of your SBG6580.
- Connect the power cord to the Power port on the rear of the SBG6580 and then plug it into an electrical wall outlet. This automatically powers ON your SBG6580. Check the front panel LEDs on your SBG6580. During the initial startup, the Power, Receive, Send, and Online LEDs should light up. See Front Panel LEDs for more LED information.
Set Up a Wireless Network Connection
Choose one of the following two options to set up your wireless network connections. When done, continue with Test Your Wireless Network Connection.

Set Up the Wireless Network on Your Computer
Note: The steps for setting up a wireless network may differ slightly depending on the operating system installed on your computer. The following steps apply to Windows® 7.
- From the Windows taskbar, click the following in sequential order:
- Start button
- Control Panel
- Network and Sharing Center
- Set up a new connection or network
- Manually connect to a wireless network
The Wireless Network Connection window displays.
- Type the ARRIS wireless network name or a different name to identify your wireless network in the Network name field. (Optional: see SSID number listed on the gateway label.)
- Select the network security type from the Security type drop-down list.
- Select the Encryption type from the drop-down list.
- Type your own wireless network password in the Security Key field (or use the Wi-Fi Security key listed on the gateway label).
- Select Hide characters to hide your password for security purposes.
- Select Start this connection automatically.
- Click Next to complete the wireless network connection. The Successfully added message should display.
- Close the Wireless Network Connection window.
Test the Gateway Connections
- Power ON your computer and log in.
- Contact your service provider to activate (provision) your SBG6580. Note: Your service provider may allow for automatic activation which will automatically launch a special website when you open a web browser. If so, continue with step 3. Otherwise, contact your service provider.
- Open a web browser on your computer, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, or Safari.
- Type a valid URL (for example, www.arrisi.com) in the address bar and then click or press Enter. The website should open. If it did not open, please contact your service provider to set up your Internet service or activate your SBG6580.
Front Panel LEDs
During normal operation, the Power, Receive, Send, and Online LEDs on the SBG6580 front panel should always be lit. The Wireless LED will light up when a wireless connection is made on your home network. If an LED did not light up, contact your service provider for assistance.
Use the WPS Pairing Button
Note: To use Wi-Fi Protected Setup™ (WPS), your computer must support WPS and also have WPA security compatibility.
The WPS option automatically assigns a random SSID wireless network name and Wi-Fi Security Key to connect your SBG6580 and other WPS-enabled wireless devices to your wireless network.
- Power ON your SBG6580 and other WPS-enabled wireless devices that you want to connect to your wireless network.
- Press the WPS button on the SBG6580 front panel.
- Press and hold the WPS button on your WPS-enabled computer or other WPS device for five or more seconds, then release.
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each additional WPS-enabled wireless device.
Test Your Wireless Network Connection
- If connected, disconnect the Ethernet cable from your computer and SBG6580.
- Open a web browser on your computer.
- Type a valid URL in the address bar (for example, https://www.commscope.com/) and then click or press Enter.
If the website did not open, please contact your service provider.
Start the Gateway Web Manager
Use the SBG6580 Web Manager to set up and manage your wireless gateway and network security configurations.
- Open a web browser on the computer connected to your SBG6580.
- Type 192.168.0.1 in the address bar, and press Enter.
- Type the default user name: admin.
- Type the default password: Motorola.
- Click Login to open the SBG6580 Web Manager.
